Can we rely on natural ocean processes for climate mitigation?

This Satellite Activity is co-organized by the “Environmental economics” section of the Monaco Scientifique Center and MERI Foundation and proposes a multidisciplinary international experts panel.

Nature-Based Solutions are possible options to mitigate climate change or adapt to its negative effects. Blue carbon and other marine biological processes are part of the solution to the ecological and socio-economic impacts of climate-related changes in the ocean. The Blue BOAT Initiative is a chilean project, which seeks to conserve and protect whales and marine ecosystem services, while monitoring the oceans, studying and valuing marine ecosystem services, particularly those associated with the role of whales in capturing CO2, necessary to address climate change.
